Instructions Summer ASE Bath Applicants (HWS Students)

ASE is an approved affiliate of HWS which means you are eligible to receive credit and CGE travel funding for this program. We send many students on affiliate programs each year, so please carefully follow the steps below:

Note that this is a dual application process, you will first be applying for approval to study abroad through the HWS online process. After receiving approval from the Center for Global Education, you will work to complete the remaining components of your HWS application while also completing ASE’s application process (mostly completed online). You will find that completing the HWS application will prepare you to complete ASE’s application.

ASE’s deadline for applying to this program is February 15th*.

*Remember, you must be accepted/approved to study abroad through the CGE before initiating your application with ASE. You should open your online application with HWS well in advance of the above deadline by clicking on the ‘apply now’ tab at the top of this page. Your application will be reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis with funding preference given to those who have their application materials in first.

You must be accepted by HWS AND the affiliate provider in order to be considered for funding through the Center for Global Education. Funding is limited, so make sure to apply as soon as possible. Funding decisions will be announced as early as the first week of December each year (for those who have completed their applications and been accepted) and continue until scholarship funds are depleted. For the highest chance of receiving CGE funding, you should aim to have your application completed by October 31 (the same deadline as our short-term programs).

ASE Application Instructions:

Regular summer program:

- The program is 5 weeks’ long and runs from June 6 – July 11. Students take two courses – one core course and one seminar (elective) course, earning 2 HWS credits in total. Note that the courses will count towards your overall gpa and will appear on your previous spring transcript, unless you choose to do them credit/no credit.

Theatre summer program:

- The program is 5 weeks’ long and runs from June 6 – July 11. Students take two courses – one core course called “Not Just Shakespeare – British Theatre History” and one performance courses called “Acting, British Style”, earning 2 HWS credits in total. Note that the courses will count towards your overall HWS gpa and will appear on your previous spring transcript unless you choose to do them credit/no credit.

Both programs:

- Students live in shared apartments in Bath and cook their own meals.

- The minimum gpa requirement is 3.0 (although those who are close to this may still apply). The fees for the program can be found here: http://www.studyabroadbath.org/drupal634/?q=node/231 This fee does not include airfare or meals.

- Seniors who apply to this program may walk at graduation but you will not receive your actual diploma until after summer grades are in and recorded on your transcript.

- You must apply online at: http://www.studyabroadbath.org. Click on Summer School then click on either Main Summer School or Theatre Summer School. Click on How to Apply (Summer School) along the top. Click on “application” and an online form will appear. Fill this out and print a copy of it after you save it, since you will need to hand in a copy to our office so we can endorse it by checking your GPA and discipline record.

- You need to request an official transcript from the Registrar’s office, using their request form, and you need to hand in the official transcript to our office along with the printed copy of your application and we will get it to ASE for you.

- Note that you only need to provide two letters of reference if your gpa is below the 3.0 minimum. Those with a 3.0 gpa or above do not need to submit any letters of reference.

- You will see that students are asked to pay a non-refundable deposit when they apply for an ASE program. You should not send this in with your application. ASE will bill HWS for the deposit when you are accepted and we will charge your student account. You should not pay anything directly to ASE. We will check with you before paying the deposit to ensure that you definitely want to accept your place on the program. HWS will take care of paying the remainder of the program fees when we are billed in the spring and we will charge your student account.
