Info for Summer UEA England (Norwich) Applicants (HWS Students)

UEA is an approved affiliate of HWS which means you are eligible to receive credit and CGE travel funding for this program. We send many students on affiliate programs each year, so please carefully follow the steps below:

Note that this is a dual application process, you will first be applying for approval to study abroad through the HWS online process. After receiving approval from the Center for Global Education, you will work to complete the remaining components of your HWS application while also completing UEA’s application process (mostly completed online). You will find that completing the HWS application will prepare you to complete UEA’s application.

UEA’s deadline for applying to this program is March 31st*.

*Remember, you must be accepted/approved to study abroad through the CGE before initiating your application with UEA. You should open your online application with HWS well in advance of the above deadline by clicking on the ‘apply now’ tab at the top of this page. Your application will be reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis with funding preference given to those who have their application materials in first.

You must be accepted by HWS AND the affiliate provider in order to be considered for funding through the Center for Global Education. Funding is limited, so make sure to apply as soon as possible. Funding decisions will be announced as early as the first week of December each year (for those who have completed their applications and been accepted) and continue until scholarship funds are depleted. For the highest chance of receiving CGE funding, you should aim to have your application completed by October 31 (the same deadline as our short-term programs).

UEA Application Instructions:

- You will fill out an application on line at UEA’s website http://www.uea.ac.uk/summerstudyabroad/apply  Note that you must have at least a 3.0 cumulative gpa to be eligible for this program, although those with slightly lower gpas may be considered.

- The program dates are June 27 – July 24

- You will take one course during the 4-week program. This will be worth 1 HWS credit. (If you want to get major/minor credit, you will need to get approval for this in advance from your academic advisor or Dept Chair).  The grades on this course will count towards your gpa and will appear on your previous spring transcript.

- Choose one course and two back-ups, in case your first choice is not available. To see the courses (called “modules” in the UK) offered at UEA in the summer, go to this link: http://www.uea.ac.uk/summerstudyabroad

- You will need to provide the name of one faculty member on the application who may be asked by UEA to provide a reference. They do not need to provide a reference unless they are requested to by UEA but be sure to get the faculty member’s permission before you put their name on the form.

- Upload a copy of your transcript from Peoplesoft to your application.

- You will need to upload one passport-sized digital photo to your application.

-Have the “study abroad approval” form filled out by Anthony Mandela in the Center for Global Education. Your gpa and discipline records will be checked. This form will be scanned and emailed directly to UEA by the CGE.

Program Fees:

- Fees for the summer program are listed in British pounds at this website: https://www.uea.ac.uk/study/international/international-summer-school/fees-and-discounts. If you apply by the early bird cutoff date (typically Jan 31) you are eligible for a 10% discount since HWS is a UEA partner school. The program fee includes tuition for the 4-week program, all academic fieldtrips and a social program with weekend and evening trips. Also included is transfer from the airport in London to Norwich and accommodation in a single room with private bathroom in a shared dorm.

- International airfare and meals are not included. Students can prepare their own meals in their shared kitchens or meals can be taken in the campus cafeterias or local restaurants, so they should have money available for food.

Note about payment: Students should not pay anything to UEA directly: deposits, fees, etc. We have an arrangement where they will bill HWS and we will bill you.

UEA Scholarships:

- The University of East Anglia is pleased to be offering a number of Scholarships for our summer programs. Interested students need to have a current GPA of 3.0 or above and will be considered based upon academic merit along with a supporting statement and the full ISS Application Form. Students can only be awarded one scholarship and can only be considered for awards offered based upon country specified. You should visit this page for more scholarship information.

- Interested students should complete the main ISS Application online, and complete and email the Scholarship Application Form to summerstudyabroad@uea.ac.uk, both before the 31 March deadline.
