Info for Summer IAU Applicants (HWS Students)

IAU is an approved affiliate of HWS which means you are eligible to receive credit and CGE travel funding for this program. We send many students on affiliate programs each year, so please carefully follow the steps below:

Note that this is a dual application process, you will first be applying for approval to study abroad through the HWS online process. After receiving approval from the Center for Global Education, you will work to complete the remaining components of your HWS application while also completing IAU’s application process (mostly completed online). You will find that completing the HWS application will prepare you to complete IAU’s application.

IAU’s deadline for applying to this program is April 15th*.

*Remember, you must be accepted/approved to study abroad through the CGE before initiating your application with IAU. You should open your online application with HWS well in advance of the above deadline by clicking on the ‘apply now’ tab at the top of this page. Your application will be reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis with funding preference given to those who have their application materials in first.

You must be accepted by HWS AND the affiliate provider in order to be considered for funding through the Center for Global Education. Funding is limited, so make sure to apply as soon as possible. Decisions will be announced as early as the first week of December each year (for those who have completed their applications and been accepted) and continue until scholarship funds are depleted. For the highest chance of receiving CGE funding, you should aim to have your application completed by October 31 (the same deadline as our short-term programs).

IAU Application Instructions

 - IAU offers various summer courses in Aix-en-Provence, France. Students can find out more info about IAU summer courses at https://www.iaufrance.org/studyabroad/programs/aix/academics/summercourses . If you decide to apply, you will create an account and fill out an IAU application online at https://www.iaufrance.org/account/register

- There are several summer options:
  • 3 credit/3 week intensive French language for all levels and fine arts electives (early June – late June or late June – mid-July)
  • 6 credit/6 week liberal arts and studio arts (early June – mid-July)
  • 9 credit/6 week liberal arts and studio arts (early June – mid-July)
- The 3- and 6-week options enable students to choose from courses in archaeology, art (painting and drawing, sculpture, arts management, architectural design, photography), creative writing, French language and literature, history, peace studies, politics, and psychology. Students interested in the 3-week intensive French language or Fine Arts elective will enroll at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

- Students on the 3-week Aix program will take one course and will earn 1 HWS credit. The course can either be a French language course or a course in English. Students on the 6-week program will take two courses in either French or English or a combination of both and will earn 2 HWS credits. Note that courses taken in the summer will count towards your HWS gpa (unless you arrange to take a course credit/no credit) and will appear on the previous spring’s transcript.

- The program fees can be found here: https://www.iaufrance.org/degree/admissions/tuition#undergraduatecosts and include tuition, housing, continental breakfast every day and six evening meals per week, activity fee, orientation, textbook rental, health, liability and repatriation insurance, excursions, and scheduled cultural activities. Additional costs students will incur are round-trip airfare, lunches, and personal expenses. Please carefully review on the program webpage.

- The minimum GPA is 2.5 with no prior French required.

- Students live in homestays and receive partial board.

- HWS students are not required to provide a professor recommendation. However, you may have to put something in the professor recommendation field in the online application. If you are not able to leave it blank, you should enter the following name and email address - Alicia Freter enroll@iaufrance.org This is the email address of the IAU coordinator and she has asked that students put her name on the online application.

- If you will be seeking major or minor credit for your course choice(s), you should meet with your academic advisor so that he or she can approve your courses. You will also need to upload a transcript to your application. It can be official or unofficial.

- When you are asked for the name of your study abroad advisor, you should enter Anthony Mandela Mandela@HWS.edu . IAU will then send a study abroad approvals form to us and it will be signed by Anthony here at the Center for Global Education. We will check your gpa and discipline record before submitting this form.

- HWS students do NOT need to pay the $85 application fee. This has been waived for our students.

- Once you have confirmed your acceptance of a place on the program with IAU, they will invoice HWS and we will bill you.
